A fabulous iconoclast

Eric Metaxas and I are both big fans of Dr. Karen Swallow Prior of Liberty University. I got to know Karen because we both write for Her.meneutics; I'm not sure how Eric got acquainted with her work, but on his Facebook page, he called her "fabulous" and "iconoclastic" afer reading this interview about her forthcoming literary memoir, which I can't wait to get my hands on. Read the article for a compelling portrait of how one conservative Christian English professor deals with stereotypes and misunderstandings; how she manages to integrate faith, academia, and activism; and why Liberty was thrilled that she had an arrest record.

Comments:

May her tribe increase
Liberty has long been the home to leading evidential apologist Gary Habermas. It appears that they now have another gem there as well. She had better be careful, though; using reason can sometimes get you in trouble on both sides of the divide. Keep on equipping 'em, Dr. Prior!
She has my dream life
I want to be this woman when I grow up! (At least, from the information given here. I'd need to know more about her.) But it looks like I have yet another book on my To Read list!

Re: Negative stereotypes about Christian education:

"That the purpose of it is to shelter students from the outside world, when in fact its purpose is to equip students to engage and critique culture from a biblical point of view."

AMEN!
Actually there is a bit of truth to the idea that the purpose of Christian Education is to shelter from the world. I remember that too. I suppose noticing it comes from the fact that prior generations had more self-defensive pariochialism and that is simply an example.
