Weekly insights from Chuck Colson and great saints of the past and presentUnbelievers – and even some “believers” – may not like the idea of Truth, but that doesn’t make it not true. “The question of truth – of a common and knowable reality that exists independently of our perception – is the great fault line of Western culture today. The dominant point of view dismisses the idea. The fastest way to provoke scorn from most university professors is to use the words reality and truth. Why does this word truth breed such animosity? Because rebellious human nature resists truth’s claims. If something is really true, it must be true not just for the person saying it but for the person hearing it. And the fact is, we don’t want to obey a higher authority from any quarter – especially what purports to be from God – for fear it will impinge upon our personal autonomy.” “So long then as the word of truth is on our side, never be in any wise distressed at the calumny of a lie; let no imperial threat scare you; do not be grieved ad the laughter and mockery of your intimates nor at the condemnation of those who pretend to care for you, and who put forward, as their most attractive bait to deceive, a pretense of giving good advice. Against them all let sound reason do battle, invoking the championship and succor of our Lord Jesus Christ, the teacher of true religion, for whom to suffer is sweet and ‘to die is gain.’” “But when he turned the water itself into wine, he showed us that the ancient Scripture comes from him too; for by his order the jars were filled. This Scripture, too, is indeed from the Lord. But it has no taste if Christ is not understood in it.” “There exists a higher ground on which conflicting religious views can measure themselves as to their Scriptural legitimacy. In the long run that system will hold the field which can be proven to have grown organically from the main stem of revelation, and to be interwoven with the very fabric of Biblical religion.” “We will destroy the church if we do not have the courage in a radical day like ours to hold onto the absolutes of the Word of God regardless of the cost. But also when we train children to take equally what the Bible says and what people will think, we destroy the Bible’s authority when the chips are down in the university.” “I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
