A Review of Ray Comfort’s 180 Video PDF print email

Sam Smith is the managing editor of the Worldview Church and pastor of the Lovells Community Church located in northern Michigan

As a pastor, I look for tools to help my congregation articulate biblical truth to those within their sphere of influence.  When it comes to awakening the community, our congregation is staunchly pro-life, a position not many in northern Michigan hold. The 33-minute video, simply called “180,” is a multiple purpose tool I highly recommend.  Here is why.

I first viewed 180 because Ray Comfort, a man who had earned my respect for his critique of popular evangelistic presentations, produced it. In this recent 2011 release, 180 is a blend between historical narratives juxtaposed with on-the-street interviews. In addition, it is evangelistic as it shows the need for salvation in Jesus Christ through the use of the Law.  Even more, it connects the Gospel of the Kingdom through illustrating how all of life is to come under the Lord’s rule.

Comfort draws reasonable comparisons with the prevailing attitude of pre-war Germany as the Nazis ascended to power. Though this approach is frequently demonized by critics for the gall of making such comparisons, Comfort pinpoints how the same reasoning that led to the Holocaust—the acquiescing of the cowardly majority of pre-war Germany—is being encouraged by our own cultural values. In it, we see several cultural-embracing, twenty-something hipsters think through the tragic implications of absolute, personal autonomy.

My family viewed the 33-minute video during our evening devotions, and later I presented it to my congregation’s governing board. As both a dad and a pastor, I encourage you to do the same.
