Conviction of Judgment (Ministering in the Spirit, 7)

T. M. Moore | Tuesday, 31 January 2012

. . . here are two other aspects to the Spirit’s work in convicting us of judgment. Judgment to come. It is also the work of the Spirit to convict us of judgment in two additional ways, each of which is a form of judgment to come, concerning which the prophets especially are so outspoken. First, the Spirit reminds us – convinces us – that a day of judgment is coming and that, in that day, all our works will scrutinized by our eternal Judge before the watching eyes of all (Rom. 14:1-12).

How to Get Started (conclusion in Ministering in Your Culture)

Joe McKeever | Tuesday, 31 January 2012

(Excerpted) In any field, not just in cultural evangelism, learners do these two things: they ask questions and listen. Look at the ministry of Jesus. As the crowds flocked to Him and took their places on the hillsides to hear Him speak, they came questioning and listening. The listening provoked more questions which encouraged more listening. It's hard work, listening. It requires us to button our lip, to turn off the television, to turn aside from the computer, to put down the newspaper.

Christ and Culture Once More

Michael Horton | Tuesday, 31 January 2012

(Excerpted) “On the surface,” Tim writes, “the Reformed and evangelical world seems divided between ‘Cultural Transformationists’ and the ‘Two Kingdoms’ views.” Although the Transformationists include disparate camps (“neo-Calvinists, the Christian Right, and the theonomists”), “they all believe Christians should be about redeeming and changing the culture along Christian lines.” “On the other hand, the Two Kingdoms view believes essentially the opposite—that neither the church nor individual Christians should be in the business of changing the world or society.”

Need Words? The Case for Corporate Prayer

Stanley D. Gale | Tuesday, 24 January 2012

(Excerpted) The genius of corporate prayer is that where you don’t have the words, others have them for you.  They lead you in prayer, often in ways you would not even have thought.  Sometimes they express things that are on your mind.  As you pray along with them in your heart and utter the “amen” of agreement, their prayers becomes yours. . . .  The prayers of others have not only led you, they have emboldened you.

Review of Affirming the Apostles’ Creed by J.I. Packer

Chuck Huckaby | Tuesday, 31 January 2012

. . . Packer’s Affirming the Apostles’ Creed is a valuable little handbook that should prove popular with pastors and congregations seeking to unlock the meaning of the creed and provide a firm, biblical foundation for Christian living. Those familiar with the creed carry with them a historic outline of the Good News. Once people understand the “Big Picture” of God’s work to secure salvation, more focused studies on particular aspects of the Bible and Theology can be pursued.

A Review of “The Good of Affluence” by John R. Schneider

Mark Sooy | Tuesday, 24 January 2012

(Excerpted) The full title is “The Good of Affluence:  Seeking God in a Culture of Wealth.”  . . . Schneider states his purpose as “renovating” the common perspectives, and misperceptions, of how faith and wealth mix (p. 2).  Rather than a theology of ascetic denial, or even the more common idea of keeping “only what you need,” Schneider sees a theology of “delight” within the text of Scripture.  He states, “Material prosperity (rightly understood) is the condition that God envisions for all human beings.

Making the Invisible Kingdom Visible

Chuck Colson | Tuesday, 31 January 2012

. . .  the Church’s mission is to make visible God’s invisible Kingdom in the world. Since God lives in the midst of His people, we in turn are called to share in and reveal His loving character to our neighbors. We are to bring God’s holiness to bear in every area of life. This understanding of holiness has moved Christians throughout history to some of the greatest advances in human dignity and freedom. ...

Where a People Abandons Virtue, Government Steps In

Chuck Colson and Timothy George | Wednesday, 24 August 2011

So, how to rebuild a culture of virtue and civic duty? The problem did not begin with elected officials and government agencies, and it will not be solved by them. We must challenge the tyranny of relativism not only in theory but also in our daily lives, families, communities, and businesses. We must show that true happiness comes only from being rightly related to God, the source of truth and virtue.

An Invitation to Pastors from Chuck Colson

Chuck Colson | Wednesday, 17 August 2011

I know you share my concern about the erosion of the moral fiber of our nation. The news is rife with stories of greed, corruption, fraud, deceit and scandals. I think you will agree that it’s time to return to the Bible as our standard of truth and to launch a movement to do the right thing – both personally and publicly.

“The most important thing we can do today in obedience to Christ is to break the spiral of silence that is pervasive in our culture. The way movements start is when people finally realize that in a free society they have to be able to speak out. They can’t be cowed into silence.” – Chuck Colson
