Preaching the Gospel to Yourself

Pastors are always encouraging spiritual growth within their congregations, but often neglect the disciplines and practices need to maintain and nurture their own relationship with Jesus. Let us grow together in the love and learning of the Lord.

TOPIC: Preaching the Gospel to Yourself

Preaching the Gospel to Yourself 1 year, 7 months ago #152

Both Jack Miller and Jerry Bridges have been known to use the phrase "preach the gospel to yourself" as they exhort themselves and us to "hold fast" to the Word of Christ which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are being saved (1 Corinthians 15:1-2).

How do you preach the gospel to yourself? Do you memorize Scripture, sing gospel-laden songs, listen to good gospel preaching on your MP3 player, meet with other pastors or a small group? In what ways do you hold fast to the gospel of Jesus daily, weekly, monthly, annually?

Share your practices with us! We could all use ideas to help us strengthen our grip on the gospel.

Funny you should ask.
I was just thinking of what really works for me: Listening to Dallas Willard on my iPod and walking through the African bush. He recently did a wonderful conference in South Africa on Living An Eternal Kind of Life Now With God. As I listen to hours of speaking on my daily walks the Holy Spirit reorients my soul, body, mind, social context and heart. It is pretty lonely the way we do missions, (1 year home in a different church each week/4 years on the field). I would not recommend such isolation to anyone. The best would be to take my listening-walks and then meet for coffee with some buddies who are also listening to the same. It seems to me.
Thanks,
Jim
